Aquinas Rowing Shed - Parry and Rosenthal Architects

Parry and Rosenthal were recently commissioned to design and document a new and larger rowing shed to replace the existing outdated and crumbling structure on the water’s edge. The brief was for a functional building with large open areas, wide doors lifting to the waterfront and plenty of natural light allowing the interiors to be used for maintenance and training.

Colours and materials have been selected for their quality and durability and so the new structure ties in with the red brick aesthetic of the College buildings behind. A dark green colour was selected for the main shed to blend in with the landscaping behind and reduce the scale of the building from the river.

The project demonstrates that with the use of simple, practical forms, and careful control of colours and detailing, a building of high quality can be achieved within a strict budget.
