Cottesloe Community Centre Parry and Rosenthal Architects

Supported by Lotterywest, Parry and Rosenthal Architects were engaged in 2012 to redevelop a site in Cottesloe, Western Australia. The new facility is multipurpose in nature and suitable for use by Scouts WA and other community groups for a broad range of activities including play group, Life Saving training and teaching.

The significant level change across the site was a key driver in locating the new buildings to minimise site grading and earth works while maximising external areas. The existing site had a number of mature trees which were retained and incorporated into the overall design.

To achieve economy, efficiency and sustainability the new single level building has a rectilinear floor plan and is oriented so as to maximise passive solar initiatives. The design of the building and materials used give a simple, low maintenance domestic scale of construction appropriate to its location. The walls are primarily rammed limestone which is a natural, warm material and robust.
