Belmont City College Performing Arts Theatre
This project involved adding a new 250-seat theatre to the existing performing arts centre and upgrading lobby areas, storage spaces, external covered areas, the green room, and amenities. Parry and Rosenthal collaborated closely with the Department of Education and Building Management & Works to develop the project brief and Master Plan. They then designed, documented, and administered the contract to construct the new facility.

Inside, the auditorium features a striking timber ceiling and seating, contrasted against black walls. Services are either concealed or finished in black, allowing the warmth of the timber and the stage to stand out. The large, simple volume of the auditorium offers a surprising and engaging experience for visitors.

The building’s design reflects the functional requirements of its use, with materials and colours chosen to harmonize with the existing campus structures. Its materiality is tactile and durable with simple detailing. The new landscaped courtyard adjacent to the theatre provides additional functionality and enhances the social experience around the theatre.
